Diagnosis

Sleeping well at night is just as important for your general health as a balanced diet and regular physical exercise.

If you have difficulty in falling asleep, if you snore a lot (or someone has told you that you snored a lot) or you suspect that you may have sleep apnoea, it is important to take these signs seriously and consult a doctor.

With diagnosis and suitable treatment approaches, the majority of sleep disorders are easily treated.

There are more complex studies that include monitoring cerebral activity (nocturnal, laboratory-based polysomnography) and simpler studies that prove sufficient for the diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (home sleep study cardiorespiratory records – level III).

In general, sleep studies consist of the simultaneous recording of various parameters aimed at assessing sleep through data obtained during the night via sensors placed on the body surface before sleeping.

Depending on the complexity of the particular study, a higher or lower number of factors may be assessed. However, all assess breathing, heart rate, oxygen level, body position and presence of snoring.

The main score which is obtained in a sleep study is called the apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI). This AHI indicates the total number of apnoea and hypopnoea events that occur per hour of sleep.

The severity of the apnoea is determined based on the AHI.

In adults, the indices are defined as:
