Questions about CPAP treatment
After so many consultations with our patients, we have realised that most of the questions asked by people using their CPAP mask on a daily basis are almost always the same, so we have compiled the most frequent ones for you to have a look at and solve yours:
Questions about how cpap machines work
Can I change the pressure of the CPAP machine?
No, when using a continuous pressure CPAP machine, the pressure is a parameter prescribed by the doctor and defined by a diagnostic test prior to therapy. In the case of many adaptation problems, it is possible to reduce the pressure to start getting used to the treatment and, once this has been achieved, adjust it to the pressure prescribed by the doctor. This modification should always be carried out by a clinical professional, never by the user himself.
What type of maintenance is required for my CPAP device?
The device requires little technical maintenance. There is a filter in the device that absorbs external dust and keeps the motor free from dirt. Change this filter every six months if you want to extend the life of your device.
What maintenance is required for my CPAP mask?
CPAP masks should be changed approximately once a year. Keep in mind that we wear them every night, and that continuous use and contact with the skin will degrade the material. To keep it in optimal condition it is advisable to wash it periodically with a mild soap and warm water. If, in addition, you lie down with a clean face, you will prevent grease from further deteriorating the mask.
I notice that air is leaking from the mask If your mask is leaking air, the treatment may not be fully effective. This could be due to a number of reasons, the mask may be damaged, ill-fitting or simply the mask model you are using does not fit your face. The mask is an essential part of proper therapy. If while using your CPAP you notice that air is escaping, please consult our team and we will advise you.
What water should I use for the CPAP humidifier?
For correct humidifier use we always recommend the purchase of distilled water, which can be easily found in any supermarket. In an emergency, you can fill the tank with bottled mineral water. Do not use tap water as limescale can damage the device.
I have just started therapy and I can’t use it all night. Don’t worry, it is normal up to a certain point, give yourself time. If for the first few nights you can only tolerate the treatment for a short time, don’t give up. Take off the mask when you can no longer and continue to rest. Two hours is more than nothing, you will see that as the days go by the time you use it will increase and the day will come when you feel so good that you won’t be able to sleep without it.
I feel well with the treatment, do I need a check-up?
The answer is yes. Although you may feel a significant improvement since you started with Cpap treatment, a medical professional should still check if the therapy is covering most apnoea episodes and determine any incidents that may exist.
